What’s Included in Children’s Dentistry
Children’s dentistry at Sweet Tooth is more than a cleaning—it’s a full-service approach to prevention, education, and developmentally appropriate care. During each visit, we may provide:
- Comprehensive oral exams
- Gentle dental cleanings
- Fluoride application
- Early cavity risk assessments
- Growth and development tracking
- Oral hygiene instruction
- Parent education and Q&A time
These visits set the foundation for long-term oral health and give children a chance to become familiar with our team and environment in a positive, low-pressure setting.

Why Early Dental Visits Matter
By starting dental care early and maintaining regular checkups, Dr. Tiana Osbourne can help prevent issues like cavities, misalignment, and enamel wear. We also monitor speech-related development and oral habits, such as thumb-sucking or pacifier use, that may affect your child’s bite or jaw growth. With early guidance, families can feel confident about how to care for their child’s teeth at home—and kids gain the tools they need to take charge of their smile.
Integrated Services for Preventive and Specialized Needs
Children’s dentistry often overlaps with other important areas of care. When needed, we may recommend additional services that support your child’s oral health, including:
- Dental Sealants for cavity prevention
- Digital X-rays for monitoring growth and hidden issues
- Sedation Dentistry for patients with dental anxiety
- Special Needs Dentistry for children who benefit from more tailored care
Each recommendation is personalized, and we always explain all options in full to empower you to make the best decision for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend scheduling their first visit by age one or when their first tooth appears. Early care supports healthy habits and identifies issues before they develop.
Most appointments last between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on your child’s age and needs. We go at their pace and ensure they feel comfortable every step of the way.
Yes. We welcome parents to be present during appointments and encourage active participation in their child’s dental care.
We do. Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry accepts SoonerCare, SoonerSelect, and Medicaid, and our team is happy to help you understand your benefits.
We recommend scheduling your child's first visit by age one, or as soon as their first tooth appears, whichever comes first. That early visit is simple and low pressure. It's mainly a chance for us to check on healthy development and for your child to get comfortable with our team before any real treatment is needed.
Baby teeth do more than most parents realize. They hold space for permanent teeth, support healthy chewing and speech development, and untreated decay in a baby tooth can affect the permanent tooth forming underneath it. Caring for baby teeth from the start also builds the habits that carry into adulthood.
Most children do well with a checkup every six months, though Dr. Osbourne may recommend a different schedule based on your child's individual risk for cavities or other needs.
This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and it's exactly what our practice is built around. We explain everything in simple, kid friendly language before we do it, move at your child's pace, and welcome comfort items from home. For children with significant anxiety or sensory sensitivities, we also offer sedation options to keep visits calm and stress free. Learn more on our Sedation Dentistry page.
Keep the conversation positive and avoid words like hurt, shot, or pain. Reading a children's book about visiting the dentist ahead of time can help, and bringing a favorite stuffed animal or blanket is always welcome. Arriving a few minutes early also gives your child time to settle in before their name is called.
Brush twice a day with an age appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, start flossing as soon as two teeth touch, and limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially right before bed. For younger children, avoiding a bottle of milk or juice at naptime or bedtime goes a long way toward preventing early cavities.
